Christine Wennen Awarded Geological Society of America
Internship at Capulin Volcano National Monument

Christine Wennen of Madison, Wisconsin, a senior at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan, was selected from a highly qualified group of applicants as a Geological Society of America (GSA) /National Park Service (NPS) summer intern at Capulin Volcano National Monument in Capulin, New Mexico. She will give talks on the volcano and volcanic processes to park visitors and prepare activities for visiting school groups. The internship is funded by the GSA Foundation.

The GSA/NPS internship program began in 1997 to help bring earth science information to the approximately 270 million people who visit National Parks each year. While the National Park Service employs more than 900 biologists, it only has 40 geologists, and many parks with high-profile geology have no staff geologist. GSA/NPS interns work from 10 to 14 weeks in a wide variety of positions, focusing on interpretation of area geology and park resource management. The program currently includes 13 National Parks, four National Forests, and a developing collaboration with the National Association of Black Geologists and Geophysicists.

The Geological Society of America, founded in 1888, is a 16,000-member scientific society headquartered in Boulder, Colorado. Through its meetings, publications, and programs, GSA enhances the professional growth of its members, and promotes the geosciences in the service of humankind. The Society encourages cooperative research among earth, life, planetary, and social scientists, fosters public dialogue on geoscience issues, and supports all levels of earth-science education.
