HOUGHTON--The Michigan Tech Board of Control today (May 19) passed a budget proposal for fiscal year 2000-2001 following guidelines set forth in a report issued earlier this month by the State House Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education.
The University administration submitted the budget for Board action even though state appropriations for Michigan's public universities have not been finalized.
"We didn't want to wait any later in the year to present budget guidelines to the campus community and to inform students of what their tuition costs would be as we switch from quarters to the semester system," explained Interim Provost Stephen Bowen.
Board members agreed that if final state appropriations vary significantly from University expectations, the budget may have to be revised.
In keeping with House subcommittee figures, the MTU Board approved a budget of $55,984,000, up from last year's figure of $51,693,000. The total includes a one-time appropriation of $1.5 million.
The budget includes tuition increases of 2.78 percent or $121 a year for lower division (freshmen and sophomores) resident undergraduates and $127 for upper division (juniors and seniors) resident students. Thus lower division residents will pay $4,486 during the next academic year, while juniors and seniors will see their costs rise to $4,699. Non-resident lower level undergrads will pay 3.8 percent or $400 more, bringing their tuition ticket to $10,978. Non-resident upper division students will see an increase of 6.4 percent or $700, hiking their tuition bill to $11,680. At the graduate level, residents will face an 11.4 percent or $500 increase, bringing their annual tuition to $4,877, while non-residents will pay 9.9 percent or $900 more, for a total of $10,008.
All Michigan Tech students will also pay an additional 2.2 percent for activities fees--an increase requested by students in a campus-wide referendum to enhance extracurricular programs, according to Bowen.
Bowen said the budget package includes an average two-step 6 percent annual salary increase for faculty and non-union professional staff.
