The entire Michigan Tech community is welcome to join former students and their families in celebrating Alumni Reunion 2000, set for Thursday-Saturday, August 3-5. Everyone is invited to all of the events; check out http://www.mtu.edu/alumni/reunion/2000/schedule.html for a complete schedule. If you plan to come to any of the meals, please preregister at the Welcome Desk, which will be located at the Memorial Union Solicitations Counter starting Tuesday, August 1; or call 487-2400.
Thursday
- Early Bird Breakfast--Former alumni association director Tom Hruby will host the Early Bird Breakfast, which begins at 8:00 a.m. in the Memorial Union Peninsula Room, on the ground floor. Cost is $10 for the buffet.
- Pasty Picnic--The traditional (and world-famous) picnic starts at 4:30 p.m. in front of Walker (unless it rains, in which case it will be in the Memorial Union). The buffet features pasties (let them know when you register if you want veggie), hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, cole slaw, and beverages. The cost is $11 for adults, $7 for children ages 6-12, and free for children age 5 and under.
Friday
- Rise and Shine Husky Breakfast--President Curt Tompkins hosts the breakfast from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. in Memorial Union Ballroom A; cost is $10.
- Flag Presentation--At 10:00 a.m., the ROTC will present Tompkins with an American flag flown over the US Capitol. The ceremony will be held near the flagpole in front of the Administration Building. An honor guard of local veterans will raise the flag and perform a seven-gun salute.
- Reception for Ed Frayer--From 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Friday, the School of Forestry and Wood Products will hold a reception honoring former dean Ed Frayer. Cake and coffee will be served in Hesterberg Hall.
- Campus Picnic--A campus picnic, with brats and burgers for sale, will be held from noon until 1:30 p.m. outside the Memorial Union. Everyone is welcome, and you don't have to preregister.
- Open Houses--Several open houses are scheduled between 1:30 and 3:00 p.m. on Friday. The ME-EM department is holding guided tours at 1:30, 2:00, and 2:30 p.m., fol Color lowed by refreshments in the eighth-floor Webb Lounge, named in honor of Daniel '56 and Yvonne Webb.
The Varsity Open House will be held at the Peter J. Grant Hockey Educational Center, in the SDC. Tours will be held of the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts.
A special open house for the MTU steam plant will feature Professor Emeritus Gordon Hellman, who was project manager during the plant's construction.
The ROTC departments are holding open houses in their historic building from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. For information on these and other tours and open houses, check with the Welcome Desk.
- Keynote Address--Dean of Engineering Robert Warrington will give the keynote address, "We Prepare the Students to Create the Future: Engineering a Plan for 2010," at 3:00 p.m. in Fisher 135.
- Kids' Night Out--Pizza, movies, games, and more will be provided for children ages 5 and up during the Awards Dinner, from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m., in the Memorial Union Peninsula Room. The cost is $10.
- Alumni Reunion Awards Dinner--The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a social hour and cash bar, followed by the 6:30 p.m. dinner and program. Honors to be presented include the Outstanding Service Award, Outstanding Young Alumni Award, Board of Control Silver Medal, Honorary Alumni Award, and the Distinguished Alumni Award. The cost is $28 per person.
Saturday
- Alumni Golf Outing and Luncheon--Arrive at Portage Lake Golf Course at 7:15 a.m. sharp to register, then tee up for the shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. The outing includes 18 holes, refreshments on the course, and a sandwich buffet at 1:00 p.m. Prizes will be awarded at lunch. Luncheon tickets are also available for non-golfers. Cost is $35 ($25 for course members); $15 for the lunch alone. To reserve a cart, call 487-2641.
- Copper Country History Bus Tour--The tour leaves from the Memorial Union Peninsula Room (there will be coffee) at 8:30 a.m. and includes travel in a motorcoach, a guided surface tour of the Quincy Mine, a guided tour of the Calumet Theatre, a visit to the Italian Hall Memorial, and a picnic in a local park. The cost is $35, and seating is limited.
- Pre-Game Barbecue--Barbecue beef, brats, and more starting at 5:00 p.m. outside the SDC front entrance. The cost is $11; $7 for children ages 6-12; children 5 and under eat for free.
- All-Class Hockey Reunion Game--Hockey alumni will hit the ice at 7:00 p.m. in the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Admission is free, and everyone is invited.
