MICHIGAN TECH TO OFFER NEW PROGRAMS

HOUGHTON, MI--Michigan Technological University will offer two new programs for the 2000-2001 school year-a BS in computer engineering and an MS in environmental engineering science.

The field of computer engineering is concerned with the design, construction, application and operation of computer systems and has an expected growth rate of more than six percent annually, over 2.5 times greater than the national average for all engineering programs. The new computer engineering degree at Michigan Tech will be an expansion of the current computer engineering option that has been offered in the Department of Electrical Engineering for many years. The environmental engineering field has grown substantially over the past ten years, and with this growth comes the need to broaden the competency of practitioners beyond the traditional confines of civil engineering, integrating the skills, insight, and vision from allied disciplines. The new degree in environmental engineering science will complement the existing degree program in environmental engineering by opening the field to students with undergraduate degrees in mathematics, the natural or physical sciences, or engineering who do not plan to seek a license as professional engineers.
