KNIGHT FOUNDATION SUPPORTS
ARTS OUTREACH AT MICHIGAN TECH
HOUGHTON--The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation recently made a gift of $75,000 to Michigan Technological University to help present preforming arts programming during the inaugural season of the the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts (RCPA), now under construction. The Center is scheduled to open on Michigan Tech's campus in the Fall of 2000.
Valerie Pegg, the director of cultural enrichment at Michigan Tech, says the funds will be used to help fund outreach performances at the RCPA, as well as some in-school concerts, for Copper Country area students, some of whom may have had limited exposure to the performing arts. "This is a wonderful opportunity to be able to share some if the first-rate classical and jazz events, dance and theater productions we will presenting during the inaugural year at the Rozsa Center," says Pegg. "Once the theater opens we'll be able to offer productions on a much grander scale than ever have been seen in this area because there has not been an appropriate venue. We are grateful that the Knight Foundation supports activities that will enrich the arts education of young people. An early beginning will encourage their enjoyment and appreciation of the performing arts."
Established in 1950, the John S. and James l. Knight Foundation makes national grants in journalism, education and arts, and culture. Its fourth program, community initiatives, is concentrated in 26 communities where the Knight brothers published newspapers, but the Foundation is wholly separate from and independent of those newspapers.
Michigan Tech's Leaders for Innovation Campaign intends to raise $100 million for the University by 2003. The featured objectives of the campaign include investing in faculty, students, innovation, leadership, and quality.
