Sparta Senior Wins Ecology Essay Contest

HOUGHTON--Nathan Smith, a senior at Sparta High School, has won Michigan Tech's forest ecology and management program's "Ecology Student of the Year" essay competition for high school juniors and seniors.

Smith's essay, titled "Keep Mother Nature Alive," deals with the impact of major environmental problems on human society and what can be done to prevent or mitigate the effects of those problems and maintain a quality natural environment. As grand prize winner, he will receive $1,000 per year for four years toward tuition in Michigan Tech's applied ecology and environmental sciences program. The program is one of several natural resources management programs offered by the University's School of Forestry and Wood Products.

Nathan is the son of Sidney and Patricia Smith of Sparta.
