Board of Control Sets New Residence Hall Rates

HOUGHTON--Michigan Tech's Board of Control Friday (March 19) set new residence hall room and board rates and apartment rental rates.

The new rates would boost the cost of most residence hall accommodations by $136 for the 1999-2000 academic year, while apartment rental rate increases would range from $3 to $11 a month, depending on the type of unit. The cost of suite-type rooms, available only in Wadsworth Hall, were increased by $21 a week over the cost of regular rooms.

Popular double-occupancy residence hall rooms will cost students $4,726 per academic year as opposed to the current $4,590, while the rate on suite-type rooms will go up from $5,304 (double-occupancy) to $5,440. Residence hall students will have the option of selecting between the 19-meal per week plan, the 14-meal plan, or the 10-meal plan. Those choosing 14 meals per week will save $102, while those who elect the 10-meal plan will save $204.

At normal occupancy, the new rates will generate an increase in total housing revenue of $314,000 or 2.7 percent.

In other action, the Board approved an Administration recommendation to establish a 15-week academic semester calendar instead of the 14-week calendar that had been recommended by the University's faculty. The 15-week calendar continues MTU's traditional half-day class dismissals for K-Day and homecoming activities and establishes a half-day class dismissal in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The Board agreed with the Administration that the 15-week calendar is more consistent with the guidelines approved by the Task Force on the Academic Calendar than was the 14-week calendar proposal.
