Yalmer Mattila Gets Tech Contract
HOUGHTON--Yalmer Mattila Contracting, Inc. of Houghton was the apparent low bidder as general contractor for the construction of Michigan Tech's Center for Ecosystem Science after bids were opened Thursday by facilities officials at the University. Contracts will be officially awarded after the bids have been reviewed by the Michigan Tech Board of Control.
MTU Director of Facilities Management Bill Blumhardt said Mattila's bid of $7,134,000 was the low figure submitted during the sealed bidding process. That total includes the bid of $1,650,000 from Dressler Mechanical, Inc. of Marquette, which will be the mechanical contractor on the project; and the winning bid of $1,115,000 from Davis Electric of Traverse City, the electrical contractor.
The total cost of the project, which is an addition to the existing Forestry Building, is $10 million, including furnishings, equipment, fees, and contingencies. The State of Michigan will contribute $7.5 million toward the project, while Michigan Tech's matching share is $2.5 million.
Blumhardt said construction on the 50,000 square foot facility will begin on or about April 1, with completion scheduled for fall 2000.
