MICHIGAN TECH SET FOR ALUMNI REUNION

Houghton--The Michigan Tech Alumni Association is preparing to host its 1998 Alumni Reunion, set for Thursday-Saturday, August 6-8. Tickets for special events are available from the Alumni Association in the Meese Center, 487-2400.

This year, the Alumni Reunion incorporates two ceremonies: the Dow Environmental Sciences and Engineering Building Dedication, on Thursday, August 6, at 5:00 p.m.; and the Ford Historic Center Sawmill Grand Opening, on Friday, August 7, at 11:30 a.m.

The annual Pasty Picnic will be held on August 6 at 6:00 p.m. on the campus mall outside the Dow Building, following the dedication. Music will be provided by the Keweenaw Swing Band. Look for signs designating reunions for this year's featured classes and groups: 1938, 1948, 1958, 1968, 1973, 1978, 1988, Golden M Club, and Varsity Football. Tickets are $11 for adults, $7 for children ages 6-12, and free for children under age 6.

On August 7, the departments of chemical engineering, electrical engineering, and metallurgical and materials engineering will be holding open houses from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

A special Mechanical Engineering Workshop is set for 1:30-3:30 p.m. in ME-EM 119. Everyone is invited to take an introductory lesson in 3-D computer modeling. The workshop will be led by ME-EM faculty and students. Lemonade will be served and (the best part!) there will be no tests. Be aware: seating is limited.

The Annual Alumni Awards Dinner begins at 6:00 p.m. on August 7 in Memorial Union Ballroom A with a social hour, followed by dinner at 6:45 p.m. and the program at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $28. If child care is an issue, consider the Kids' Night Out Program, for ages 5 and up, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. in the Memorial Union Peninsula Room.

Saturday kicks off with the Alumni Golf Outing at Portage Lake Golf Course. Arrive at 7:15 a.m. to register. Then tee up for the shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. The outing includes eighteen holes, refreshments on the course, and lunch at 1:00 p.m. Tickets are $25 for course members, $35 for nonmembers. Lunch tickets may be purchased separately for $11 for non-golfing spouses.

Everyone is invited to sign up for the Copper Country History Bus Tour, which departs at 9:00 a.m. from the south side of the Memorial Union and returns at 1:30 p.m. Local historian Ed Yarbrough will unveil Copper Country history, from Quincy Mine through the historic churches of Calumet and Laurium. The tour wraps up with lunch at the Miscowaubic Club. Cost is $20, including lunch. If you plan to go, sign up early--only forty-five seats are available.

The reunion winds down with the Wind-Up Barbecue, on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the Sherman Field end zone. That way, you won't have to walk far to see the Varsity Football Alumni Skills Competition. This year marks a special reunion of MTU varsity football players. They will be dusting off their talents beginning at 7:00 p.m. Barbecue tickets are $11 for adults and $7 for children ages 6-12. Children under 6 can eat for free.

For more information, drop by the Alumni Association office in the Meese Center on campus or call 487-2400.
