Olsson Named Alumni Director
HOUGHTON--Stephan Olsson, a 1990 graduate of Michigan Tech and native of Houghton, has been named the University's fifth executive director of alumni relations. Olsson succeeds Darcy Way, who is now advancement officer for the athletic department.
Olsson brings a strong marketing and people-oriented background to the position. He joined the Michigan Tech staff in 1996, opening the University's first off-campus office in the Detroit area. He moved to the main campus in Houghton in 1997 as advancement officer in the School of Business and Economics.
"It is important to continue the member-oriented service of the Alumni Association," Olsson said. "Alumni organizations around the country have had to revamp some of their programs in light of the other time and service demands on today's college graduate. We need to make sure our membership grows and, to do that, we need to provide services our alumni want."
After graduation, Olsson worked as a sales and management account manager and as a sales manager in several organizations. He also coached the Michigan Tech alpine ski team from 1987 until 1992 and trained and raced with the U.S. ski team in the United States and Europe.
"Stef brings strong marketing and sales experience to the position," said John Sellars, senior vice president for advancement and university relations at MTU. "He has done a great job in the School of Business and Economics and I am confident he will be strong leader for our alumni programs."
Olsson is the son of Milton and Trudi Olsson of Dollar Bay.
The Michigan Tech Alumni Association provides a variety of services for its members. The Association publishes the quarterly Alumnus magazine, operates the annual August alumni reunion, and sponsors 35 alumni chapters throughout North America.
