DOW BUILDING DEDICATION AUGUST 6

HOUGHTON--Michigan Tech will celebrate the completion of the Dow Environmental Sciences and Engineering Building on Thursday, August 6, at 5:00 p.m.

The dedication ceremony will be held in the courtyard outside the facility's main entrance. Building tours will follow the dedication.

Construction of the $44 million, 167,000 square-foot facility began in summer 1996. It opens as scheduled this fall, housing the departments of biological sciences, civil and environmental engineering, and geological engineering and sciences.

The dedication features an address by Gary Anderson, president of Dow Corning, and comments by Herbert (Ted) Doan, president of the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation. The foundation's $5 million contribution toward the building's construction is the largest private contribution ever received by the University. Richard Robbins '56, who donated $2.5 million to support both the Dow Building and the Rozsa Performing Arts Center, is also a featured speaker, along with Board of Control Chair Jim Mitchell and Michigan Tech President Curt Tompkins.

The Ford Motor Company Fund was also a major donor, providing $1 million for laboratory equipment.

The Dow Building has some unusual attributes in keeping with its focus on the environment. Its South Lobby serves as a large, passive solar space, and a solar greenhouse is located on the roof. The three-story Robbins Atrium, located on the north side, provides informal meeting and conference space.

In addition, some of the building's mechanical systems, such as exhaust fans and heat recovery pumps, are open to public view, along with displays illustrating how they work.

In conjunction with the dedication, the MTU Alumni Association is holding its annual Pasty Picnic in front of the Dow Building. Tickets are $11; call 487-2400 for more information.

All faculty, staff, and students are invited to the dedication, as well as the general public. Refreshments will be available.
