DEPUYDT WINS DONOVAN AWARD

HOUGHTON-Blue Key National Honor Fraternity has named Cheryl DePuydt, chair of the Physical Education Department at Michigan Tech, as the winner of the 1998 Clair M. Donovan Award for outstanding service. The Award is presented annually by Blue Key to a member of the MTU faculty, staff, or student body who has contributed the most outstanding service during the preceding year.

DePuydt was cited for her efforts in coordinating MTU's United Way Campaign, which resulted in a record level of donations and pledges during the past year, and for her contributions in promoting figure skating in the community.

A native of Marquette, she received her BS, MS, and Ed. Specialist degrees from Northern Michigan University. She came to Michigan Tech in 1972 as the first full-time female faculty member in the Athletic Department. In 1982 she received the MTU Distinguished Teaching Award and in 1991 she was honored with the State of Michigan Teaching Excellence Award. She was the University's first women's basketball and volleyball coach and for several years served as the MTU cheerleading coach. In 1992 she was inducted into the MTU Sports Hall of Fame.

DePuydt also has served as skating director for local figure skating clubs for the past 25 years. She was the local community ice show director for many years.

The Donovan Award honors Clair M. Donovan, an MTU alumnus, who through his many years of service as national president of Blue Key and as a civic leader, made an immeasurable contribution to the public image and prosperity of Michigan Tech.
