ECOLOGY ESSAY AWARD COMPETITION
FOR HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS, SENIORS

HOUGHTON--Michigan Technological University's forest ecology and management program is sponsoring an "Ecology Student of the Year" competition for high school juniors and seniors interested in ecology, science, and natural resources.

Participants must submit an original 400-700 word essay addressing the following: "Describe a major environmental problem facing humanity today. What can be done to solve this problem?" Titles, graphs, tables, pictures, and legends, if included, do not count toward the 400-700 word limit.

The grand prize winner will receive $1,000 per year for four years toward tuition in Michigan Tech's applied ecology and environmental sciences program. All other entries will receive a one-year $500 assistantship for ecology research in MTU's forest ecology and management program. In addition, 10 runners-up will receive a copy of Professor Rolf Peterson's book: "Wolves of Isle Royale: A Broken Balance." The winner's essay will also be submitted to his/her local newspaper and to the Houghton Daily Mining Gazette.
