MTU PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICER NABS SUSPECT

HOUGHTON-A Pontiac, MI man suspected of stealing a vehicle in downstate Royal Oak and driving it to Houghton was apprehended Sunday (Jan. 11) by a Michigan Technological University Public Safety Officer.

The MTU Public Safety Department reported that at approximately 7:20 a.m. Sunday they were notified that a vehicle was stuck in a snowbank in Daniel Heights. When an officer arrived at the scene, the driver of the stuck vehicle, a 1993 Honda, was attempting to extricate the car from the snowbank. A check of the vehicle's registration showed that it had been reported stolen Saturday in Royal Oak.

The driver of the vehicle, Cheng Yang, 17, was arrested and lodged in the Houghton County Jail. Monday Yang was arraigned in 97th District Court in Houghton and charged with receiving and concealing stolen property valued at more than $100. Bond was set at $2,500. Other charges against Yang are pending in Royal Oak, according to MTU Public Safety officials. They said Yang is not a student at Michigan Tech, but had apparently traveled to this area to visit friends.
