Dr. William Bulleit, professor of civil and environmental engineering, has been named Associate Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan Tech. The appointment was announced by Dr. C. Robert Baillod, professor and chair of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Professor Bulleit's responsibilities will be primarily in areas related to the curriculum. This includes oversight of the ABET accreditation process, semester change, educational outcomes assessment for the Civil and Environmental Engineering programs, and other issues related to the undergraduate and graduate curricula.
Bulleit came to Michigan Tech in 1981 as an assistant professor and was promoted to the rank of professor in 1993. Before coming to Tech, he worked at HNTB in Bellevue, WA as a structural engineer in the company's bridge engineering division. He also has industrial experience as a structural engineer at Perry Oceanographics, Inc. designing manned and unmanned submersibles.
Professor Bulleit's research specialties are wood structural engineering and structural reliability. He has authored or co-authored fifty professional articles and serves as an associate editor for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Journal of Structural Engineering. In recognition of his classroom skills, he received the MTU Distinguished Teaching Award in 1986 and has been a finalist for that award twice since then. He has also received the Outstanding Faculty Award presented by the Civil and Environmental Engineering student organizations.
Bulleit has also been active in University service, serving on the University Senate for six years, as chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Promotion, Tenure and Policy Committee for three years, and on numerous other university committees.
