Winningest Coach In MTU History Accepts Position At UW-Green Bay
Houghton, Mich. -- Kevin Borseth, head women's basketball coach at Michigan Tech for the past 11 years, has resigned effective June 1 to take accept the position of Head Women's Basketball Coach at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
"We're obviously sad to see Kevin go," said Rick Yeo, director of athletics at Michigan Tech. "He has done a tremendous job at Michigan Tech and developed the women's basketball program into a national contender on a yearly basis. We know he'll be successful in Green Bay and we wish him and his wife Connie and their family all the best."
Borseth has been a figure of stability and success for the Michigan Tech women's basketball program during the last 11 seasons. A five time GLIAC Coach of the Year, Borseth was named the fifth head coach in MTU women's basketball history on September 1, 1987. Since that time, he compiled a record of 225-97 (.699 winning percentage).
Under his tutelage, the Huskies made seven appearances in the NCAA Tournament in the last eight years (the school's only seven NCAA appearances), captured four of the last eight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season titles and advanced to the GLIAC Tournament all eight years the event has been held, including six appearances in the title game. In addition, the Huskies have posted 20-plus wins in seven of the last eight years.
In 1992-93, Borseth guided MTU to its third straight GLIAC title and the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Fabulous Four Tournament en route to posting a school-record 30-3 overall mark. At the NCAA II Championships, the Huskies made GLIAC history by becoming the first league team to notch a victory in the elite post-season event by virtue of their 74-60 win over Bentley College in the third-place game.
The winningest coach in the program's history, Borseth was honored as the 1990-91 Converse NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year as selected by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. He was also the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan's Women's Basketball Coach of the Year in 1990-91 and 1992-93.
A national search for Borseth's replacement is underway.
