Staff Council Meeting Minutes March 20, 2008 I. Guest Presentation Brent Burns, Assistant Director, Alumni Relations presented an overview of the activities and services of the Michigan Tech Alumni association. The Alumni Association hosts over 50 events each year for 30-200 people. In addition, the can offer assistance to departments with customize email and postal mailings to alums. II. Call to Order Chair Becky Christianson called the meeting to order at 12:22 pm. III. Members Present Bev Auel, Rob Bishop, Nancy Bykkonen, Becky Christianson, Diane Garrow, Peggy Gorton, Kathy Goulette, Rob Greenhoe, Allyson Jabusch, Peter Larsen, Susan Liebau, and JoAnne Stimac. In addition, Brent Burns, Danielle Treadeau, and Tanya Maki from the Alumni Association were present. IV. Old Business a) Inclement Weather Committee: Rob Bishop has finalized the committee's recommendations to the administration and passed around copies for review. He will also email out the draft to the list for comments. Please pass along comments by next Wednesday (3/26) and he will incorporate changes in the final version and forward it to Ellen Horsch. b) Finance Committee Report: Bev Auel reported that the current balance is at $8,065.93 but we expect that to go down quickly as Family Fun Day charges are posted. c) Search Committee Updates: Dean of the College of Sciences and Arts is the only active committee and Karan Salo was unavailable to give a report today. d) Family Fun Day: The day was a success. 544 people checked in, online registration was a hit, and 160 adult drawings and 104 kids drawings were held, both up from last year. There were too many international student volunteers-we need to set a limit next year. Accounting has informed us that the grand prize will be taxable, we need to consider options for next year. e) Staff Awards: Peggy Gorton reported that June 11th is the tentative date and locations are still being considered. More volunteers would be welcome for the committee and the committee will meet soon. f) Blood Donation Lunch 'n Learn will be held Wednesday, May 7 in Wads G17/19. Sally Coron from Marquette General Hospital will be the speaker. g) Blood Drives: Staff Council and the Benefits Office will co-sponsor two blood drives (May 21 and August 13). Due to MUB renovation, the events will be held in the DHH All-Campus Study Lounge. Appointments will be taken from 10:00 am to 1:45 pm. Walk-ins will also be accepted. Ingrid said that the Benefits Office can provide some incentives (door prizes) for those who donate. Volunteers will be needed for check-in, runner, and someone to take blood pressure and pulses. More about this at the next meeting. h) Graduate School Dean Review: The committee has met and developed a rough questionnaire to be sent to the campus community. They hope to be done with the review by the end of the semester. i) Campus Tours for New Staff: Rob Bishop provided an update. He was the Staff Council representative on a recent tour. Four new staff members attended and found the tour helpful. V. New Business a) Staff Council/MUB calendar: Becky reported that she has been in contact with Theresa Coleman-Kaiser and they hope to have the calendar ready for production in April. b) Presidential Open Forum has been moved to Monday, April 28 at 2:00 pm. c) The Auxiliary Services "East Coast Tour" was fun-those who attended recommend others get involved when it happens again. d) Professional Development Day: Is coming up in May. Rob Bishop wonders if we are planning to co-sponsor again.
