Staff Council Meeting Minutes March 15, 2007 I. Guest Presentation Guest Theresa Coleman-Kaiser, Director, Memorial Union and Rozsa Center gave a presentation about the MUB, Campus Dining, the Rozsa and several other affiliated areas of the university. Highlights included: * The MUB is now offering “Taste of Cultures” events that highlight foods from many different areas around the world. * Interested members of the campus community can get information and special discounts by subscribing to the foodspecial-l mailing list. * 70 vending machines on campus are now managed by Auxiliary operations with outsourced supply. A web reporting tool for machine problems is coming soon. Auxiliary Operations is also looking into adding card swipe capability to vending machines. * The Ford Center’s dining operations are now being managed in coordination with other campus dining areas. * Dining Services will also be taking over administration of campus catering. * There are current plans in place for a renovation of the MUB ballrooms. * Tech Express is now located in the campus bookstore, allowing the second entrance/exit to be open during normal business hours. * Mark Johnson from the bookstore has negotiated special rates with Yellow freight. These rates are available to the campus community and should be investigated if any department needs freight services. * Rozsa operations—Val Pegg will be retiring in April. * Questions: What is the status of the Gundlach residence? A: Have owned for almost two years now, but currently no funding for renovations that would be needed for any campus use. Q: Is a total MUB renovation still planned? A: It is now planned in stages. II. Call to Order Chair Becky Christianson called the meeting to order at 12:39 pm. III. Members Present Ramona Backman, Rob Bishop, Becky Christianson, Peggy Gorton, Rob Greenhoe, Peter Larsen, Patti Myllyoja, JoAnne Stimac. Guest: Rick Berkey IV. Old Business a) The February Staff Council meeting was canceled because many members were traveling during the originally scheduled meeting date. b) Becky announced that the next Presidential Open Forum hasn’t been announced but the next Board meeting will be in May and forums are typically held near the same dates. c) Inclement Weather Committee: In light of the recent bad weather, we should clarify our information and provide additional recommendations to the administration. d) Family Fun Day update: Pete, Rob B., and Rob G. thanked everyone for their support. Over 500 attended and the event was very successful. Many prizes were donated. e) Scheduled 2007 meeting dates: ? Thursday, April 19 ROTC Blue Room ? Thursday, May 17, MUB Alumni B ? Thursday, June 21, MUB Alumni B f) Staff Recognition: Karen Salo and Peggy Gorton are working on planning the even and will need additional volunteers for the committee. They are coordinating possible dates with the President’s office—looking at the first or second week in June. V. New Business a) Becky reported that construction on the Michigan Tech Child Care Center started this week. b) Staff Council/MUB Calendar update: Becky reported that all the dates are set except for a few remaining from the MUB. Becky also requested input on which holidays would be appropriate to include given the diversity of the campus culture. Ramona reported that the Rozsa calendar experienced the same questions over the last several years and decided to include only U.S. national and campus holidays for simplicity. The council agreed that this was a good approach. c) Ramona asked about the idea the Council talked about recently about developing an orientation for new staff members. Perhaps with a monthly campus tour and welcome activities for new staff. More discussion is needed to plan how we can move forward on this idea. VI.
