How can we be allies and how can we help others be allies to us?
Here are the results of the discussions around developing ally
relationships for Michigan Tech and the local community.
“People of Color” break out group response to the question:
“What would I like to see, hear, have done (or not done) in this community that would make my experience better?”
Simply say “Hello.”
We like being talked to. Don't be afraid of us.
Initiate conversation
Have had conversations that were very good, then the next day, it's like they never knew you. At MTU there is not much eye contact, lots of heads down while walking.
Leave the comfort zone - e.g. race, same major, sex, etc.
Like in the cafeteria try sitting somewhere else.
Enlightening Entertainment
Don't assume we like rap. The Rosza at MTU brings a variety of African American performers in the area of music (jazz and gospel), now what about plays? We we write plays too.
Whites have said “I is a-comin'” to me as a black person. No one talks like that. It is very insulting.
Dispel stereotypes (negative)
Like if from Detroit, then we have a gun, or if from UP, then boring or never see people of color.
Or “inside” stereotypes, like light skin is prettier, or grade of hair is better.
Keep negative comments to yourself - (from an incident where someone experienced yelling from a passing vehicle that was racist.)
Ask yourself why you feel that way
Do not make everything a black/white issue
Don't assume just because I'm black I must be from Detroit
If I am the only black person I might be a token, but it doesn't bother me. Or ask me a question, it doesn't bother me. I can't speak of all blacks but for me...
Have patience for other's ignorance
Don't assume we all know each other, all the blacks.
Do #1 - simply say “Hello.”, #2 - Initiate conversation and #3 - Leave the comfort zone. They are “Action Items”.
