Absenteeism
When an absence is anticipated, you are expected to notify your supervisor in advance. When an unanticipated absence occurs, you should notify your supervisor promptly and continue to inform your supervisor daily, if possible, as to the probable date of return.
Emergency Duty
If you must lose time from work because of volunteer emergency duty (such as fire department or Red Cross), you will be paid the difference between the pay for these duties and your regular University pay.
In order to be eligible, you must have your membership confirmed by completing forms available from Human Resources prior to being available for such duty. Time served must be confirmed by the appropriate agency.
Closure of University
The president, executive vice president/provost, or their designated representative may decide to declare University closure for a specified period of time (examples might include but are not limited to prolonged power outage, prolonged loss of heating capability, or closure of main highway due to inclement weather). You will be notified by your supervisor or through local media, i.e., radio and newspaper. Most employees will be allowed to go or stay home with pay. However, operational and other employees required to stay or report to work will receive equal time off at a later date at the convenience of their respective departments.
Political Candidacy
State and Federal Offices
If you become a candidate for elective state and federal offices, you will be required to obtain a leave of absence for the period of such candidacy. If elected, you will be required to resign your position with the University before taking office. Determination of the period of such candidacy and of the time of the required leave of absence shall rest with the president of the University (see Section 4, On the Job, Conflict of Interest).
Temporary or Part-Time Offices
If you become a candidate or serve in such offices as the State Board of Education and elective non-state or non-federal offices of a temporary or part-time nature, you are not required to obtain a leave of absence (such as School Board member, City Council member, etc.). However, suitable and mutually satisfactory arrangements are to be made with appropriate administrative officers for performance of your regular duties.
Service Absence
A service absence entails military training (reservist or national guardsman) not exceeding twenty work days per year, or jury duty, or testifying due to a subpoena. Regular employees are paid the difference between military base pay, jury pay, or witness fees, and regular pay for work time lost during the employee's schedule of hours.
Military Service - A leave of absence for military service shall be granted upon written request through the employee's immediate supervisor and upon approval of the department chair/director and Human Resources, for a normal tour of duty.
Jury/Witness Service - If you are called for jury duty or to testify at the order of a court, you will be excused from your job without loss of pay or benefits for a period not to exceed thirty work days with pay in any calendar year. However, your regular wages will be reduced by the amount of any compensation you receive for such service.
When you report for jury duty but are not selected to serve for that day or session you must return to work for completion of the normal work schedule or until your next scheduled duty.
