Termination can occur under the following conditions: discharge, layoff, resignation, or retirement.
Exit Interview
Upon leaving the University, all regular employees must participate in an exit interview conducted by the Benefits Office of the Human Resources department.
At the exit interview, you will be provided information regarding continuation of health care insurance (COBRA), retirement benefits, and final pay. You will be required to return your MTU Tech Express card, keys, and credit cards, and also invited to express suggestions to make Michigan Tech better.
Discharge
The University expects you to maintain
certain standards of performance, safety, and conduct. Michigan Tech
does not tolerate such behavior as stealing, dishonesty, insubordination,
drinking alcoholic beverages on the job, or use of drugs in violation
of the Controlled Substance Act. In addition, inability to perform
one's job, repeated tardiness, excessive absenteeism, and failure to
comply with University policies are not acceptable. These examples are
not all-inclusive.
Generally, these standards are recognized and observed by staff members
without any need for action by supervisors. When these standards
are not observed, the University has the right to discipline and/or
discharge.
Discipline - may be in the form of an oral warning, a written
reprimand, or suspension. Any one or a combination of these actions
may be used, depending on the circumstances of the case. Termination
does not necessarily require progressive discipline.
Layoff
The University endeavors to provide stable employment for its staff members. However, situations such as a lack of funds, lack of work, or reorganization may require a reduction in the work force. The employee to be laid off will receive notice as soon as practicable. At the time of notice, the employee will meet with his/her supervisor and receive written notification.
In the event of a layoff, you should schedule an appointment with the Benefits Office to discuss your layoff status. Human Resources will be available to answer any concerns.
While in layoff status, you have recall rights for one year from date
of layoff or for a period equal to the length of your employment, whichever
is less.
Recall
Recall provides extra consideration when you apply and meet the required
qualifications for an open position. Recall is not an automatic
referral; you must complete an application and apply for the open
position.
If you plan to resign from your position, notify your immediate supervisor
in writing at least two weeks in advance of your proposed date of
departure. Whenever possible, the University desires more than a two-week
notice. This notice will allow the University to plan an orderly transition
of duties and enable the Payroll Office to prepare your final paycheck.
Unemployment Compensation
In the event of termination or layoff from the University, all
employees of the University are eligible to file a claim for unemployment
compensation in accordance with the Michigan Employment Security Act.
