Meeting Notes from September 8, 2000,
Present: Tony Rogers, Dan Greenlee, Julie Seda, Ellen Horsch, Jay Meldrum, Helene Hiner, Anita Quinn, Bob Keen, Jim Pickens, Debbie Lassila
A recap of the Thursday, September 7 Senate Sponsored forum concluded that the 25 attendees did not state a preference among the proposals presented by the committee. It was felt that this was, in part, due to the amount of information presented and discussed. The committee decided to share the presented proposals and some of the ideas shared at the forum with the MTU community for feedback on which proposal might be best.
The proposals presented are listed approximately halfway down the web page at the Fringe Benefits website URL: http://www.admin.mtu.edu/hro/fringe/forum3.html
The committee would appreciate hearing your preference either at the website or emails to committee members.
Some of the comments at the forum were that our fringe rates are higher than other institutions we hope to emulate and are a product of a good benefits package and approximately 10% lower than average salaries. Suggestions at the forum that the committee is not considering include decreasing vacation or health benefits for soft money employees. Other suggestions included using part of the Deans' return on research (incentive funds) to help offset the fringe benefit rate further than the proposed models.
Another presentation on fringe benefit rates will be given during the upcoming University Senate meeting Wednesday, September 13.
