US 41 Detour Information for Summer 2009
There will be two large construction projects involving work on US-41 on the Michigan Tech University campus and Shelden Avenue in downtown City of Houghton. The Michigan Tech campus project will involve a partial lane closure and detour. The City of Houghton, Shelden Avenue project will involve a complete road closure with all traffic detoured around the project.
Start date for the City of Houghton, Shelden Avenue project will be April 20, 2009
Completion of the City of Houghton, Shelden Avenue project will be November 6, 2009.
Start date for the Michigan Tech campus project will be May 4, 2009.
Completion of the Michigan Tech campus project will be August 21, 2009.

Northbound US-41 traffic will be detoured onto Cliff Drive at the east end of the Michigan Tech University campus.
At the intersection of Cliff Drive and US-41 (Townsend Drive) at the west end of the campus the truck traffic will
turn left onto US-41 and proceed to MacInnes Drive. Proceed south on MacInnes Drive and west on Sharon Avenue to M-26.
Turn right onto M-26, proceeding north to the Portage Lake Lift Bridge. An optional route will to be turn right at the
Cliff Drive - US-41 intersection at the west end of the Michigan Tech University campus. Proceed west on College Avenue
to Franklin Square (see Figure 3). Proceed west on Montezuma Avenue to the Portage Lake Lift Bridge (See Figure 4).
The dashed portion at the MTU campus shows the northbound route after completion of the MTU project on August 21, 2009.
All routes will be posted, watch for signs.

Southbound US-41 traffic will be detoured starting at the south end of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge onto M-26.
Proceed on M-26 south to Sharon Avenue, turn left onto Sharon Avenue. Proceed east on Sharon Avenue and north on MacInnes Drive
to US-41. Turn right on southbound US-41.
All routes will be posted, watch for signs.

Northbound US-41 traffic will be detoured onto Montezuma Avenue. Montezuma Avenue will become two-way traffic for the duration of the construction activities.
All routes will be posted, watch for signs.

Southbound US-41 traffic from Portage Lake lift bridge will proceed south on M-26 and follow posted detour route (red). See Figure 1.
Northbound M-26 to Southbound US-41 has no change, proceeds as usual (green).
Northbound US-41 traffic from Montezuma Avenue will proceed north through the loop and proceed onto the Bridge (turquoise).
Northbound US-41 to southbound M-26 traffic will proceed to temporary signal light, to cross traffic lanes, and continue south on M-26 (orange).
Northbound M-26 to northbound US-41 traffic will proceed to temporary signal light, to cross traffic lanes, and continue north on US-41 (royal blue).

The new median area (in red) from McNair Hall to the end of Wadsworth Hall that will be completed by August 21, 2009.
