At the beginning of each semester, undergraduate students are classified for that semester as follows:
| Credit Hours Completed | Class Standing |
|---|---|
| 0 - 29.9 | Freshmen |
| 30 - 59.9 | Sophomore |
| 60 - 89.9 | Junior |
| 90 and up | Senior |
A student's class standing determines when a student can register, according to the priority schedule. Also, certain courses are open only to students that have obtained a high enough class standing.
Holds prevent a student from registering at all and must be removed by the office placing the hold before the student will be permitted to register. Holds are placed on registration for the following:
You can check your registration status on the Web prior to registration to be sure you will be able to register on time.
Students on Academic Probation wishing to register for more than 16 credits must obtain approval from the Dean of Student Affairs. In addition, students wishing to register for more than 18 credits must obtain written approval from their academic advisor. Properly signed forms may be turned in to the Office of Student Affairs (for those on probation), to your academic department (for more than 18 credits), or to the Office of Student Records & Registration.
Some sections require special approval before a student may register. This is indicated in the course offerings booklet with a note. A code of A1, A2, A3, A5, or A6 will also appear in the column marked SPC APPR. Approval for these sections must be obtained from the department offering the course.
Some courses are restricted by class year, college, level, or major. Undergraduate courses with such restrictions are indicated with a note. Students not meeting the restriction must obtain approval from the department offering the course.
Students may not schedule any courses in conflict without the approval of both instructors. A signed Time/Exam Conflict permission form should be submitted prior to registration to avoid delays.
Check for closed sections, have alternates ready. Departments do not usually grant permission into filled sections until the first week of class. Seat availability can be checked on the OSRR Website.
Some courses consist of parts, such as lecture, recitation, and lab components. All such components must be taken during the same term. When registering, students must sign up for all parts of the course.
Some departments require that certain courses must be taken during the same semester. These are indicated with a note. When registering, students must sign up for both courses.
Check for prerequisites, as listed in the Semester Transition Guide, prior to registering for courses. Students will have courses for which they lack the prerequisite(s) dropped from their schedule after registration.
All permission forms and waivers are available on the web or in the Office of Student Records and Registration.
