We recognize that parents, guardians, spouses and others are important in the success of our students and understand their need to guide, encourage, and be involved. The on-line Guest Access system allows students to grant selected individuals access to their private student record information.
Student education records are protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) which is a federal law that protects the privacy of their records when a student reaches the age of 18 or enrolls at a postsecondary institution such as Michigan Tech. Students then have the right to determine who may have access to or receive information about them. To learn more about FERPA you may visit the Office of Student Records and Registration FERPA website. With the Guest Access System students make the determination as to what information they will make available and to whom and they may grant or remove access to their education records at any time.
Using the Guest Access system the student may grant access to any or all of the following information:
Students may authorize access from the MTU Login Page. They will identify the guest (name/email address), and select the information that they would like to make available to the guest. The guest is sent instructions via email on how to establish their own secure University username and password. The guest will then complete the access registration by providing the University with the information necessary to set up their own secure account and the student is notified via email when this step is completed. As part of this process, students have the alternative of verbal access for their guests without Internet access.
