Student electronic identification images are defined at Michigan Tech as part of a students' educational records and are handled in accordance with the Buckley Amendment of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Images of faculty and staff members are part of the personnel record of the employee and are available under the same rules as other personnel information.
Public release and/or electronic or print publication of images for any purpose other than educational is permitted only with the written consent of the individuals of whom the images are made and only for the purposes stated in the release. Examples of cases in which consent is required are departmental or course Web pages, student organization Web pages and event brochures.
The electronic identification image is data that must be treated as any other confidential or personal information. Persons having legitimate access to the image under the terms of this policy are obligated to insure that it is protected against misuse.
