Leadership Programs

Michigan Tech offers a variety of student leadership opportunities. Whether you are a member of a student organization, an officer or a student interested in obtaining new skills in preparation for your future, each of these programs provides the student with a chance to acquire specific skills they will need in order to be successful at Michigan Tech.

Student Organizations Retreats, customized workshops ranging from hour sessions to 3-day weekend retreats for individual student organizations are designed by staff in the Office of Student Affairs.

Challenge Course, opened in the fall of 1996 on the MTU cross-country ski trails. The Challenge Course provides University community members with an opportunity to practice teamwork, communication, conflict resolution, leadership, global diversity and group dynamics skills. Participants complete problem-solving initiatives in teams of 8-15 individuals on over 20 outdoor elements customized to the group's needs.

Leadership Week, a collaborative effort between the Office of Student Affairs and the students of Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society. The week includes 20-30 workshops for individual students, student leaders and club advisors on a variety of topics related to student leadership development.

LeaderShape, is a six-day seminar at the beginning of January each year. Students from across all majors experience a broad array of leadership skill acquisition activities. Experiential learning in the framework of small lecturettes and then practical applications of major leadership themes such as ethical decision-making, motivational techniques, assessing group dynamics, developing vision for making effective changes and communication skills help each student develop their abilities as leaders. In addition, each student develops a project to complete upon their return to campus, a project to improve life at MTU or the local community. As a university dedicated to preparing our students to be effective future leaders, LeaderShape provides our students with the skills necessary to work effectively with others and problem solve.

For more information about any of these exciting student leadership opportunities, contact the Office of Student Activities at 487-1963 or send an e-mail message to Rob Bishop, Assistant Director, Student Activities.
