Students may drop courses through the end of the third week of a semester without a grade being reported. From the beginning of the fourth week through the end of the eighth week of a semester, courses dropped will be indicated by a grade of "W" on a student's transcript.
If a student drops a course during the first three weeks of a semester, the course is not entered on the student's transcript.
From the beginning of the fourth week through the end of the eighth week of a semsester, courses dropped will be indicated by a grade of W on your transcript.
After the eighth week of a semester, you may request a late drop from the Dean of Students Office, which will consider only those requests that clearly involve extenuating circumstances beyond a student's control. Those late drops approved by the office must also have the comments of your departmental advisor and instructor. The registrar will show the course on your transcript with a grade of W.
As a distance-learning student, you begin classes approximately one to two weeks later than those taking courses on campus. Thus, the refund schedule that follows is based on your actual first week of class.
Students dropping a course will receive a refund according to the following schedule:
| drop date | refund |
| first week | 90% |
| second week | 80% |
| third week | 70% |
| fourth week | 60% |
| fifth week | 50% |
Refunds for accelerated courses are calculated on a prorated basis.
A student may add a course to his or her schedule through the first 5 instructional days of a semester or the same percentage of time if a course is offered under a different time module. From the sixth through the tenth days of instruction (or the same percentage if a course is entered under a different time module), to add a course, the student must obtain the signature of the instructor and their academic advisor. After the tenth day of instruction (or the same percentage if a course is entered under a different time module) a course may not be added to the student's schedule unless both of the following conditions are met:
To drop, add, or change a class after you have submitted your registration, it's mandatory that you complete a Drop/Add/Change of Registration Form. These forms are available from disted or online at http://www.admin.mtu.edu/disted/cs_index.html. They may also be picked up at off-campus sites where Michigan Tech distance learning courses are offered. Please send them by regular mail or fax to the following address:

You must have instructor approval if you choose to audit a course. Students wishing to refamiliarize themselves with the material typically take courses for audit. You may take a course as an audit, and at a later date for credit, subject to the approval of your major department. You will be charged the same fee for auditing a course as that of a course is taken for credit. Letter grades of "V" for satisfactory and "U" for unsatisfactory, with no grade points or credit, are given for courses taken for audit. The instructor of the course will establish the criteria for the audit and will determine the requirements for satisfactory completion of the audit. These requirements may include class attendance, homework, and/or satisfactory completion of exams.
You have six weeks to change your status from credit to audit once the course has begun. Changes in registration will be permitted only with the approval of the instructor and disted.
Withdrawal procedure--If you terminate all your course work during the semester, your registration must be formally withdrawn. Withdrawals are processed according to the established refund schedule.
If you withdraw from the University within the first eight weeks of instruction, you will receive no grades (including W) for that term.
If you withdraw after the eighth week of the semester, you will receive N grades in all courses that you are passing at the time of the withdrawal and F grades in all courses that you are failing at the time of the withdrawal. If you have previously withdrawn from a course, the W grade will remain on the record at the time of withdrawal after the eighth week of the term.
Students called to active duty are guaranteed readmission upon completion of active service. Enrolled Michigan Tech students who are called to active military duty will be given the opportunity to work out the best possible solution for maintaining their academic standing. They must choose one of the following options before departing for active service:
Leave for active service with a tuition refund of 100 percent. Refunds involving financial aid will be adjudicated to decrease the payback required from the student to the lowest possible amount.
Agree that temporary grades will be issued for enrolled courses. The temporary grades will be P for Progress or I for Incomplete. In some cases, arrangements can be made to complete the course work while on active duty. Otherwise, the student may complete the courses when he/she returns to the University.
The Office of Student Affairs monitors the academic progress of degree-seeking undergraduate students. Those having academic difficulty may be asked to withdraw from specific courses, may be placed on academic probation, or may be dismissed academically. The Office of Student Affairs can be reached at (906) 487-2212.
Students who are not making satisfactory progress toward a degree are placed on academic probation. Academic probation is a strong warning to students that their scholastic performance is less than that expected by the university. Failure to improve after receiving a probation notice may result in academic dismissal from the university (see below). Notices of academic probation are sent to students at the end of semesters.
A student who is seeking the baccalaureate or associate degree is placed on academic probation under any of the following conditions:
A student on academic probation will be removed from probation when all of the following conditions are met:
Academic dismissal will result if a student fails to be removed from probation the next semester of enrollment after receiving the first probation notice. A student receiving a notice of academic dismissal will not be permitted to enroll at the University.
Appeals of academic dismissal will be considered if students can document that there are unusual or extenuating circumstances surrounding their recent academic performance. They must also be confident that they will be able to remove themselves from probation by the next semester of attendance. Students wishing to make such an appeal must do so in writing to the Vice-Provost and Dean of Student Affairs within five calendar days of receipt of the dismissal notice.

A student who is dismissed for unsatisfactory academic progress may apply for reinstatement through a written request to the dean of student affairs after a period of nonenrollment. Each request is considered individually and promptly. A student who is reinstated after academic dismissal will be reinstated on academic probation. Failure to achieve good academic standing by the end of the semester after reinstatement will result in a second dismissal. There shall be no reinstatement after a third academic dismissal.
A student reinstated on probation shall be considered as having enrolled under the catalog and curriculum in effect at the time of re-enrollment without regard to original matriculation.
A decision of expulsion terminates your status as an enrolled student with no opportunity for reinstatement. An expelled student may not enter any part of the University without specific authorization from the dean of student affairs. Expulsion is listed on your academic transcript. Michigan Tech policies and guidelines for situations that can lead to expulsion are outlined.
You can find more registration procedures in the Michigan Tech Student Handbook and by visiting the Office of Student Records and Registration.
