“Part One: The Culture of American Higher Education: Teaching at Michigan Tech”

Who Should Attend: New International GTAs.

Purpose: To acquaint participants with American instructional practices and procedures.

When: Monday, August 25, 2008, 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
                (Lunch will be provided from noon to 1:00 p.m.)
                [Note: Part Two of this session will be on Friday, August 29, 2008]

“Michigan Tech Students, Programs, Policies, and Procedures”

Who Should Attend: New non-international GTAs who did not attend Michigan Tech as undergraduates.

Purpose: To acquaint participants with the needs of Michigan Tech undergraduates.

When: Thursday, August 28, 2008, 9:00 a.m.-10:15 a.m.

Where: Wadsworth Annex, Room G11W, Wadsworth Hall


“Shifting Gears: Being an Effective Teaching Assistant”

Who Should Attend: ALL new non-international GTAs. (Including those who attended the 9:00 session)

Purpose: To acquaint participants with successful strategies for serving students and succeeding as graduate students.

When: Thursday, August 28, 2008, 10:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
                (Lunch will be provided from noon to 1:00 p.m.)

Purpose: To acquaint participants with American instructional practices and procedures.

When: Friday, August 29, 2008, 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
                (Lunch will be provided from noon to 1:00 p.m.)

NOTE: All international students, whose first language is not English, must take and pass the SPEAK Test (test of spoken English) before being given instructional duties. If you have not taken the test, please contact the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Faculty Development, 487-2046, or stop by the office, G01 Harold Meese Center, to arrange a time to take the test during Orientation Week.
