The Role of the Student Session Facilitator

Purpose:

To actively involve students in the educational process. We learn when we teach. Depending on the enrollment of the course, students will be required to lead a mini-lesson on a course reading or exercise of their choice.

Assignment:

Students are to carefully read/view the assigned course material for the session and then to develop a 10-15 minute classroom learning activity that highlights key or central points of the reading or the video. Students are especially encouraged to be creative and imaginative in developing their lesson plan for the session.

Students should think of ways that they can use their personal strengths, talents, and insights to effectively engage students and to ensure that the key learning outcomes are mastered by the students. The goal is to make other students think, get them engaged, and to reinforce or clarify understanding of key issues in the material being reviewed.

Evaluation:

Serving as a session facilitator is a requirement of the course.

Students will receive written feedback from fellow classmates. These lessons will be recorded and students will be required to review the recording and provide a written reflection on the strengths and weaknesses of their lesson and to identify what they might change to improve the lesson in future applications.

Be creative, use your imagination.
