Ah
yes, the Quik Stop, right there in Houghton, near the miner statue as
you drive into town. It reminds me of late night walks back
to campus, after
a few beverages. That was usually the best time to eat there.
We use to
call it the Quick Slop.
Love these old photos. Wonder you have any of the Longshot,
in Houghton.
That was a great place with lots of 70s tunes, with a sunken
dance floor.

Steve: We deliver! And the vintage 1975 description from
the Gazette is priceless: Houghton's new Longshot Bar is a
marvel to behold emphasizing the western, barn and rustic type
atmospheres. The new establishment employs 12 persons in the
realm of bar tenders, waitresses and music instrument operators. According
to Manager Don Meyers, the business is excellent and the place
only had its formal opening Wednesday. It is located one block east of
the Douglass House and the management now is thinking of furnishing cold
sandwiches to its patrons. It operates a Lounge Room where patrons may
analyze athletic contests and stress the happenings of the community. The
Longshot can look back more than a century, to the former Miller Hotel
on Shelden Avenue. The photo shows the bar to the right and the Lounge
Room, left.

I sure do remember the "quick stop" sometimes
corrupted to the "quick
slop", but it was the first fast food burger joint in town. Must have
ben about 1975, giver or take a year...

I lived across the road from the Quick Stop during my senior year, however,
I can only remember eating there a few times. I guess we would rather drive
100 miles to Marquette for McDonalds. If I remember correctly, the Quick
Stop was more of a local hangout. The spot where our apartment was is now
a Best Western.

Dennis,
That Quick Stop sign brought back memories, but not because I ever ate
there. My wife and I married on her graduation day in 1973,
and we moved
into a triplex rental downtown so I could finish the last term
of my masters
in business. We spent a very pleasant summer living on Sheldon
Ave. before
taking jobs downstate. On Friday and Saturday nights, we'd
see the same
car go by a half dozen times as the locals cruised Houghton
and Hancock and
back again.
Imagine my shock/disappointment when I came back to Houghton a few years
later to find our old apartment torn down and replaced by the
Quick Stop!

Ate there once. Learned a tough lesson...food at Wads wasn't all bad.

If I remember properly, the Quik Stop (pictured) was a fast-food drive
in
on the east end of downtown, practically next door to Diamond
Mikes. This
would have been just west, and across the street, from today's
Best
Western. At the time, this was the only fast food in Houghton,
and
perhaps north and west of Negaunee.

That was the fast food restaurant on the south side of Shelden in the
first block. Their pancakes were better than their hamburgers.

Dennis,
WOW!! Can't believe there's actually a photo of the sign!!
We called
it the 'Slow Slop' instead -- it was a more fitting name for
that burger
joint.

Aah the Quik Stop, thanks for bringing back those memories.
I worked there my freshman year (1977-78), the joys of serving Tech Students
at 2:05 am just after Diamond Mike's closed....
Then having to clean up the mess they left as they continued staggering
back to Tech ;-)
As for the article on the deer crashes, add Liz and I to those stats.
we each hit a deer 7 days apart with a different vehicle last
month..
