On a Roll

Another couple of frantic weekends have come and gone.

The first one featured Open House, and some 300 potential Huskies and their families were on campus. We were staffing the ParentNet table in the Memorial Union, and it’s always interesting to find out what other schools the students were looking at: State, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and U of M were the main contenders. We did our best to persuade the students and especially their parents why Tech is the best choice. With the way the enrollment numbers have been improving, the word is getting out.

During the week, I was able to stop by WMichigan Tech and get on the air with my favorite DJ, my son. I requested Motown and the Stones and did the station ID. I was told I "wasn't bad."

Last weekend was a great one to be a Husky. Homecoming Week ended with another rainy Friday clearing up just enough to get the parade in. Hobos were out in force with some unique twists. Sig Tau’s had a hobo village, some hobos panhandled the crowd asking “Change?” and jiggling plastic cups (and some in the crowd gave in). Many of the floats had their cardboard boats in tow as the parade ended up at the beach and a boat race. Lots of duct tape was evident.

Saturday started with more rain (September and October have been soggy), but, again, it cleared up in time for the football game. Tech prevailed on a soggy field and the surrounding foliage was just about peak (all references to the Colorologist aside). “Prevailed” is an understatement: Tech 40, Ferris 12.

Finally, the hockey season of great expectations kicked off Saturday night, and the boys didn’t disappoint. They hammered the University of Toronto, whose goalie was great, 7-0, with many Huskies getting in the scoring column. It was just an exhibition, but still . . .

On Sunday, my daughter was at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC, watching the Detroit Lions lose. She wore her Michigan Tech t-shirt to the game (like she should), and the people she sat down next to asked if she had driven in for the game from Michigan! They also had a relative who attended Tech, and they were impressed to meet “real Yoopers.”

“Creeping past peak,” he said. You’re a week off, I reminded him. “I did say the rain would slow it down,” he said, defensively. “Besides, it was so nice up here we made the Today show!”

LITTLE HUSKIES CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER DEDICATED: Michigan Tech celebrated its new Little Huskies Child Development Center at a dedication ceremony Thursday, Oct. 4. The 4,400-square-foot center, located on MacInnes Drive between the Student Development Complex and the U.J. Noblet Building, opened its doors Aug. 14. It is operated by professional childcare provider Gretchen Preston, who has nine Gretchen's House childcare centers in southern Michigan.

PARKER NAMED FIRST JOHN AND CATHI DRAKE ENDOWED PROFESSOR: Michigan Tech alumnus John L. Drake received what he calls "a tremendous education at Michigan Tech, both in mechanical engineering and in business administration." That education helped him succeed as the founder and chairman of Drake Manufacturing Services. Now he and his wife, Cathi Drake, want to help make a Michigan Tech education even better for future students.

BOARD FINALIZES CAPITAL OUTLAY REQUEST: The second phase of the Center for Integrated Learning and Information Technology tops Michigan Tech's 2009 Capital Outlay Budget Request. The wish list will be submitted to the state for consideration. As capital outlay funds become available, they are allocated by the state in part to support major construction projects at the 15 public universities. Michigan Tech's plan, which the Board of Control approved Thursday, Oct. 4, completes the work that began with the construction of Rekhi Hall and the Opie Library in 2004–05. The new $59-million project would involve further renovation of Fisher Hall (adjacent to Rekhi Hall) and construction of bridges connecting those structures to the Memorial Union and to the Wadworth residence hall, located across U.S. 41.

ASHFORD APPOINTED TO BOARD: Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm has named Lenora D. Ashford, the dynamic principal of Lewis Cass Technical High School in Detroit, to Michigan Tech's Board of Control. She was appointed to represent the general public, succeeding Norman A. Rautiola, whose term has expired.

BOARD RECOGNIZES MROZ FOR EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE: Citing exceptional performance across a variety of metrics, the Board of Control has awarded President Glenn Mroz a 4 percent salary increase. "Michigan Tech has been making extraordinary progress," said Dr. Kathryn Clark, chair of the Board of Control. "Under Glenn's leadership, the University has developed a far-reaching strategic plan and is vigorously pursuing its vision to build Michigan Tech into one of the nation's premier technological universities. We are succeeding by virtually every measure, and it's imperative to recognize Glenn's role in spearheading that effort."

CAREER DAY 2007 WRAP-UP: The hill leading up to the Student Development Complex was covered with students in their Sunday best on their way to their future. Krystle Olson and Derek Weichlein hit the door of the SDC at the same time. “Surveying,” Olson answered when asked about her major. She was looking to intern this summer “with anyone.” Weichlein, a civil engineering major, was looking for a summer internship with Construction Resources Management Inc. They entered a whirlwind of recruitment.

HOMECOMING FOOTBALL—TECH 40, FERRIS STATE 12; Huskies Tally Six Takeaways to Get Back in Win Column: The Michigan Tech football team found its game today. The Huskies controlled both sides of the ball and even tallied a special teams touchdown en route to a 40-12 victory over Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Ferris State amid sloppy field conditions at Sherman Field. Considering the last two weekends and the fact it was Homecoming, the timing couldn’t have been better. Tech registered six takeaways on the day, starting with a sack by Chris Nowak and fumble recovery on FSU’s opening possession. Two plays later, Steve Short found Keith White open for a 25-yard pass play and 6-0 lead.Alex Tiseo’s extra point attempt was missed.

TECH BLANKS TORONTO, 7-0, AT MACINNES STUDENT ICE ARENA—Angelow Notches Four Points in Preseason: Michigan Tech junior goaltenders Michael-Lee Teslak and Rob Nolan picked up right where they left off last season as they combined for a 7-0 shutout over the University of Toronto at MacInnes Student Ice Arena tonight. Teslak, who started in goal, made four saves in the first period and seven saves in the second. Nolan, who took over at the 12 minute mark of the second period, made his first save of the game on a hard shot just four seconds in. He finished the period with two saves and made four more in the third period to finish with six.

Opening faceoff for the contest has been pushed back from 2:07 p.m. to 5:37 p.m. to accommodate the live broadcast.

VOLLEYBALL FALLS AT WAYNE STATE, 3-1: The Michigan Tech volleyball team took game one of its match at Wayne State tonight, but the Warriors bounced back for a 3-1 victory at the Matthei Center. The Huskies (6-10, 4-5 GLIAC) scored a 30-21 victory in the opening frame before WSU claimed the next three games by scores of 30-24, 30-27, and 30-25. Veronica Armstrong paced the Huskies in kills with 13. She also had 10 digs. Kali Jeter notched 11 kills and 20 digs and was named Superior Player of the Match. Alison Greene and Kelsey Skoog shared the setting duties with 25 and 24 assists, respectively.

BOAT ACCIDENT VICTIM IDENTIFIED: The circumstances behind a 23-year-old Hancock man’s fatal fall from the Keweenaw Star cruise boat Thursday are still not completely known, according to Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean. McLean said Jessie James Jaukkuri, who was a resident of the Oak House in Hancock, apparently was holding onto the railing of the boat when he fell into the water.

CONDO NEARING COMPLETION: Things have been quiet recently on the outside of the Moyle Construction’s Canal Crossing condominiums next to the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, but work is continuing through the fall, according the project manager. Josh Purrenhage said workers are doing painting and other work. “Most of the work is on the inside,” he said.

ARBY'S IS COMING TO HOUGHTON: The owner of Houghton’s new Arby’s franchise is looking forward to opening. “We think it’s going to be our flagship store (in the U.P.),” said Chris Cooper. “We’re really expecting a lot of great things in Houghton.” Construction work begins today at the former Mancino’s building on Razorback Drive, said Kevin Geshel of Moyle Real Estate & Development.

You know you're a Tech student, part II

-You've ever seen a snow blower driving down the street that was bigger than your car.
-You laugh when people down south try to complain about the winter weather.
-You've actually seen two feet of snow fall overnight, and not a single class was canceled the next morning.
-You actually know how to drive on snow.
-You spend more time driving on snowpack than on clear pavement.
-You've seen it snow the second week of October, and have heard of it snowing much earlier than that.
-You know where the MEEM, EERC, MUB, ATDC, DHH, SDC, and M&M are, but you would rather spend your time at the DT or KBC.
-For you Broomball isn't just an extra-curricular activity... it's a way of life!
-Chutes and Ladders isn't just a board game anymore.
-For one day a year traffic comes to a halt as the highway is taken over by hobos.
-The idea that it could still be snowing in Houghton a month into the summer semester does not strike you as odd.
-You've ever played Oozeball.
-When someone says they're going to the Library, it doesn't have to mean they're going to a building full of books.
-You know why "dirty snow" just doesn't cut it during carnival.
-It is snowing in April and nobody seems to notice.
-You went looking for your car today and realized you don't know which snow drift is yours.
-Driving to Calumet in a raging blizzard can be justified with stop at Burger King.
-You know how to correctly pronounce Keweenaw, Baraga, L'Anse, Houghton, Ontonagon, and sauna.
-Almost any drive has become a cakewalk compared to the 9 hours it takes to drive downstate.

I always look forward to the TechAlum, and ALWAYS find something interesting.

This time, I was most entertained by Jason Tuisku's "You know you're a Tech student if". My problem, after 29 years, is that I can only answer affirmative to 11 of the 13 measurements. I must be getting old. I hope that I do better on Part 2 - or I might not be rejected from being considered as a Toot. Unfortunately, I have to wait a whole 2 weeks for Part 2 to take that test.

Unfortunately, I DO know where Lot "R" is (or, at least, was). I parked there for a years. For a while, it was known as "Freshman lot", and it actually seemed more efficient to walk to town from the dorms, instead of going up to R, shoveling the car out, and getting it started. And, where in the world is "Perkins" and "Taco Bell"? They must be some of those new-fangled fast food places. I DO remember going to Big Boy, across the street from the Sound Center (and just a couple of doors down from the Longhorn Saloon) when I needed a quick bite to eat before walking (staggering?) back to Wads after Diamond Mike's closed for the night.

I told Charles that Perkins and Taco Bell are up the hill on M26 near the Arby's location mentioned above. I spent a fortune in the Sound Center and played Frisbee for Diamond Mikes.

Dennis--Doug Davies (69) wrote about the ham equipment on top of Wadsworth. I was never up there, but I did grow up about 10 miles from Heathkit and went to their showroom often. I remember commenting often enough that I would warm up the dorm room at Wads and then turn on my Heath power amp (also tube). I also worked some in the radio station on ground floor that you talked about earlier in the year.

The Michigan Tech Alumni Association is calling for nominations for exceptional individuals to serve on its Board of Directors, one of three governing boards at Michigan Tech.

As the policy-making body for the Michigan Tech Alumni Association, the Board of Directors establish programs, set priorities for the Association, and work with the Director of Alumni Relations.

The Alumni Association works to engage alumni with the University in many ways, including increasing participation in chapter events, recruitment of prospective students, enhancing networking with HuskyLink, (Michigan Tech’s online community), promotion of Michigan Tech in areas where alumni live and assisting the Michigan Tech Fund with increasing annual unrestricted gifts.
