Non-Tenure-Track Lecturer/Professor of Practice Faculty Review Procedures

Individuals holding non-tenure-track Lecturer appointments, have two-year rolling appointments. Annually, a NTT Faculty Review Recommendation Form L must be completed and approved for each individual holding a Lecturer appointment. A recommendation for a Lecturer may be one of the following: to continue the appointment, promotion, or notice of termination. Notification of termination must be given to individuals holding a rolling two-year appointment at least one year in advance of the appointment's proposed expiration.

Individuals holding non-tenure-track Senior Lecturer, Principal Lecturer, and Professor of Practice appointments, have continuous appointments. Notification of termination must be given to individuals holding a continuous appointment at least one year in advance of the appointment's proposed expiration.

Procedure

RESPONSIBILITY ACTION
Provost (via Academic HR) Sends to deans a written notice with lists of faculty in the lecturer/professor of practice categories for review and recommendations of: continuing appointments, promotion, notice of termination; copies of Forms L and E; promotion check list; and sample letters for continuance of appointment, promotion, and notice of termination.
Department Chair/School Dean Organizes department/school committee to review performance documentation and/or promotion material.
Department/School Committee
  1. Reviews documentation and makes written recommendation of continue appointment/promotion/notice of termination to chair/school dean.
  2. Forwards written recommendation and all documentation to department chair/school dean.
Department Chair/School Dean
  1. Reviews documentation and committee's recommendation. Makes written recommendation by completing a Form L to continue appointment/promotion/notice of termination and Form E for teaching evaluation to college dean/provost.
  2. Forwards Forms L and E and all documentation to college dean/provost.
College Dean (if applicable)
  1. Reviews documentation and recommendations by the committee and department chair. Indicates agreement with chairs' recommendation by signing Form L. If not in agreement, contacts department chair to discuss, and if still no agreement, indicates so on Form L by no signature.
  2. Forwards Form L and all documentation to provost, via Academic HR.
Academic Human Resources
  1. Reviews all documentation for recommendation, completeness of forms, appropriate signatures, and completeness of dossier if promotion, etc.
  2. Forwards Form L and all documentation to provost.
Provost
  1. Reviews documentation and all recommendations. Indicates agreement with recommendation moved forward by dean by signing Form L. If not in agreement, indicates so by no signature.
  2. Forwards to president for approval/disapproval.
President
  1. Reviews and approves/disapproves recommendations.
  2. Returns the Form L and documentation to provost (via Academic HR) for notification to deans of final determination.
Academic Human Resources
  1. Makes 3 copies (2 for schools) of Form L and draft letter (1 copy for deans, 1 copy for departments (if applicable), 1 copy to Human Resources). Makes 1 copy of Form E for provost files.
  2. Returns documentation and 2 copies (1 for schools) of Form L and draft letter to deans.
  3. Keeps original of Forms L and E for provost's file with copy of draft letter.
  4. Forwards 1 copy of Form L to Human Resources/Payroll.

College Dean
  1. Forwards one copy of Forms L, E, and the draft letter to the department chair to inform faculty of final determination.
  2. Files one copy of Forms L, E, draft letter, and back up material.
Department Chair/School Dean
  1. Makes any changes indicated on the draft letter.
  2. Sends original letter to individual faculty.
  3. Sends one copy of letter to college deans (if applicable) and one copy to Academic HR.
