9.6.8 A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum

A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum, located at 1404 E. Sharon Avenue, is home to one of North America's great mineral museums. The museum features the world's best collection of crystallized native copper and native copper in calcite. Among the worldwide specimens on display are numerous examples of the finest specimen of an individual mineral species, including arguably the finest crystallized native copper specimen from a now dormant Keweenaw native copper mine. The museum's fluorescent display is among the best at any mineral museum. While the museum is noted for its Lake Superior region collection, it also has outstanding suites of minerals from around the world. The A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum is the official mineral museum of the state of Michigan. Admission for Michigan Tech faculty and staff with ID is free. Guided tours are available for special guests, but should be reserved in advance. Visit the museum web site for schedule and additional information: www.museum.mtu.edu or via telephone (487-2572).
