9.6.11 University Relations

The Department of University Relations communicates to both internal and external publics on behalf of the University and assists the University community by providing services to support its communication objectives.

The News Bureau serves as the major source of news and information from the University to external publics through the news media. These news releases include faculty research developments and academic achievement by students. The News Bureau also employs a video reporter who puts together a monthly package of video news releases for stations in seven Michigan markets as well as stations in Duluth, Minnesota, and Green Bay and Wausau, Wisconsin.

The University's Print Shop provides one-color printing and binding, and photocopy services for faculty, staff, and students.

Publications/Photo Services' major projects include the University Catalog, student recruiting viewbook, Alumnus Magazine, Research Magazine, publications for sporting events, departmental brochures, and brochures promoting summer youth programs. The unit provides editing, typesetting, design and still photographic services for the University. It is also responsible for weekly production and distribution of Tech Topics, the University's principal internal communications vehicle. In addition to photography, the unit processes black-and-white prints, color slides, photo copying, lithographic negatives and halftones, and slide programs. This unit also employs free-lance artists to produce charts and graphs for research reports and journals. Publications/Photo Services has won numerous awards for publication design excellence.

The Special Events coordinator is responsible for the detailed planning involved with conducting major events on campus, including the twice-yearly commencement exercises.
