Chapter 9. University Policies and Services
Section 9.5 Academic Support Services
The Van Pelt and Opie Library aims to be the academic heart of the campus for faculty and students. A wide range of services and programs are available in the building, online through our Web site at www.mtu.edu/library and in your department, classroom or laboratory. Developments in the building and through our Web site - meant to support instruction and research - are rapidly changing so we encourage you to make use of the departments' library liaison, a librarian that will guide you to what's available to you to save your time. Faculty is encouraged to request general and specialized tours of the building and its services at any time. For any questions, needs or further details, contact us:

Print collections circulate to faculty for 17 weeks (and can be renewed three times); print journals circulate for three days. The majority of journals published after the mid-1990s are available online through the library's Web site with access using your Michigan Tech ISO login. Should you need articles from the library's print collection, they are delivered to your desktop, at no charge, through ILLIAD. ILLIAD also serves as your gateway to request books, articles and media from other libraries world-wide, also at no cost to you. A substantial reference collection and a large U.S. Government Depository are available in print and digital formats.
The Library & IT Service Center provides a one-stop desk for faculty's quick reference services, charge-out of library materials and convenience services including laptops, cameras and other digital equipment, pick-up and drop off of materials borrowed from other institutions, and the full range of information technology and e-learning help.
The University Archives and Copper Country Historical Collections offer a vast array of print, graphic and manuscript collections that represent the history of the Keweenaw Peninsula, the mining companies, university and campus history and life, social life and organizations, and the regions towns and cities. Professional archivists are available during walk-in hours and by appointment to assist faculty in both research and the creative use of historical materials in classes and other instructional endeavors.
The E-learning Group is also available in the library as is the Center for Teaching and Learning and Faculty Development. A tele-conferencing, video-conferencing suite and support for its use is available in the library as is a Digital Studio with a growing array of scanning, printing, plotter services and software to support these functions.
The liaison librarians are available to faculty to provide research assistance and direction to collections, digital databases and e-books. Each would be pleased to consult with you in your office or in the library to provide support to you or your research/lab assistants to identify the publications needed to support your programs. Workshops, individualized instruction and consultation are also available for topics including bibliographic file management (e.g., EndNote, Zotero) and copyright and other scholarly communication matters.
The E-learning Group is available for instructional design consultation and assistance with Blackboard design or use. This group can provide support for online instruction and learning and hybrid courses. Librarians will work with you to provide library orientations, assist in the creation of research assignments and customize course pages to help students gain general information literacy competency and knowledge in specialized information literacy and the literature of the disciplines. The library supports both paper and electronic reserves and will assist faculty in obtaining copyright permissions and setting up reserved materials for courses.
Faculty is invited to share their ideas for how the library and its staff can assist in supporting your research, teaching and service needs. We consider the Van Pelt and Opie Library a work in progress and will be grateful for your consideration. We will be pleased to meet with you in the Library Café at your convenience to listen to your needs and advice about the building and our services.
