4.3 Employee Education Program

The Employee Education Program is a benefit intended to offer professional development opportunities to Michigan Technological University employees. This program allows full-time and part-time (FTE .75 or greater) regular exempt employees to enroll in up to two (2) MTU courses per quarter for which the University will pay the tuition and academic fees. The benefit is prorated according to percentage of effort for regular part-time (FTE .75 or greater) employees. (Board of Control Policy 5.8)

Procedure:
  1. Prior to enrolling in a course, employees must obtain approval from the immediate supervisor and must have the billing statement validated by the Human Resources Office.
  2. To be approved, courses must offer individual enrichment and/or professional development.
  3. Eligible employees must register and pay the cost of books, supplies, and penalties in the usual manner.
  4. Employees participating in the program are subject to the general regulations and course prerequisites published in the current catalog.
  5. Only employees who are eligible to participate in the Employee Education Program shall have their tuition and academic fees paid by the University.
  6. Courses may be taken within the regular working day as long as job performance is not diminished.
  7. Courses may be audited or taken for credit.
  8. Employees must pay tuition for any courses failed, dropped, or during the term of which the employee ceases to have active status. Employees who, because of circumstances beyond their control (i.e., shifts in work load, illness, etc.,) have to drop a course after the refund date, may request that the tuition and academic fees be waived. This request should be made through their direct supervisor with final approval obtained from the Executive Vice President and Provost.
  9. Employees who participate in the program will not have to pay the $50 continuing enrollment deposit.
  10. The University reserves the right to discontinue, modify, or limit the availability of this program at any time.
