COURSE NUMBERING IN SEMESTERS

In addition to the department letter prefix, four numbers will identify a course. A leading '0' is used for courses that do NOT count towards any degree requirements ( but there may be credits attached to the course), '1' begins the freshman level, '2' the sophomore, '3' the junior, '4' senior, '5' masters and '6' ph.d level. The remaining three numbers are determined by the department - at their discretion. Currently, departments vary widely in how their numbering schemes are organized. It is anticipated this will continue.

An 'H' will be added to the 4 digit course number for Honors courses when the course information is passed to the Banner system for those courses that have the 'honors course' selected in the new course proposal database So all together, a course MAY look something like: HU1001H.

A ‘D’ may be added to indicate a distance learning course which is different than the same numbered course offered to on-campus students.

NOTE: A course number may not be used more than once. This means, if a course number existed as another course, which was dropped, the number of that course cannot be used again for a new course. The reason for this is that our student system retains the dropped course forever as it may be in past students' academic history and will print out on those students' transcripts.
