NEW PROGRAM PROPOSALS

Program proposals that require Acdemic Deans Council, Graduate Faculty Council, MTU Faculty Senate, MTU Board of Control, and Academic Affairs Officers Committee approvals are limited in how fast they can be processed and put in place because of limited number of annual meetings and agenda deadlines which are, in some cases, six weeks prior to meeting.  Proposals do not proceed to the next approving body without approval of the previous.

There are three flow charts for new programs:

1. Undergraduate:  New degrees and Concentrations
2. Undergraduate:  New Minors and Certificates
3. Graduate:  New Degrees, Spin-offs, Options, Certificates and termination

The two flow charts for undergraduate programs reflect the different requirements of the two different Presidents’ Council, Academic Affairs Officers Committee, Academic Program Review forms; “New” and “Spin-off”.  Some points to remember:

• The “Spin-off” form requires less supporting documentation from the proposing department and university. 
• Spin-offs for concentrations, minors, and certificates now require only notification of the Board of Control after approval by the Senate and State.
• Minor and certificate programs require only notification (after Senate approval) of the Academic Affairs Officers Committee.  However concentrations require state approval.
• New undergraduate degree proposals require Board of Control approval before going to the Academic Affairs Officers Committee. 
• New undergraduate degree programs and concentrations require Academic Affairs Officers Committee approval.

Listed below are the meeting dates for the Academic Affairs Officers for the next academic year.  The correlating dates for submitting academic programs for review are also shown.

Before submission to PSUM/AAO,  proposals must be reviewed by four on-campus entities, including approval by the University Senate and the Board of Control, and the Administrative and Deans' reviews.  The Senate and Board of Control each have set meeting dates and agenda deadlines. BOC Agenda deadline is two weeks prior to each meeting.
