Task Force Charge

The MTU General Education Development Task Force will develop a revised plan for MTU's General Education Program, and its implementation, administration and continuous improvement. This is to be part of a university-wide curriculum reform, and much of the planning for General Education must be in place before revision of disciplinary curricula can be completed. Thus, the Task Force is asked to complete planning for at least the level, timing and general content of General Education courses by September, 1998. A complete plan for all but the details of course content would be preferable at that time.

In planning MTU's revised General Education Program, the Task Force should consider the extensive experiences of other universities who have revised general education in the last decade, and the recent scholarship on general education program design. The plan should address concerns raised in the 1988 report of the NCA evaluation team. Goals of the revision should include....

  1. As part of the planning process, to develop a university-wide consensus in support of MTU's general education program, and a plan for sustaining this consensus through the program's implementation and ongoing administration.
  2. Significant and conspicuous coherence within the program, with degree requirements clearly and faithfully linked (in design and in practice) to goals.
  3. An ambitious, creative and forward-looking general education curriculum that is supported by a cadre of dedicated faculty, and that will engage undergraduate students in achieving its learning goals.

The Task Force should conduct an open, consultative process that draws input from all faculty, students and staff. When the Task Force has produced a consensus proposal, it must be presented to the faculty for their endorsement in a referendum to be conducted by the University Senate.
