Please encourage your students
to sign up for an online
mentor through MentorNet, the E-Mentoring Network for Diversity in
Engineering and Science. MentorNet's One-on-One Mentoring
Programs
focus on matching women and underrepresented minorities with female or
male professionals from all sectors as mentors for one-on-one,
email-based mentoring (e-mentoring) relationships. MentorNet proteges
are
in the engineering and science fields and are community college,
undergraduate, and graduate students, postdocs and untenured
faculty.
(Note that all students - male and female- may apply.)
MTU has joined MentorNet for the academic year so that you can offer
this
valuable service to students.
This is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn more about
engineering and science careers. Mentoring is an effective way to help
women and underrepresented minorities persist and succeed in
engineering
and science, and to increase their participation in the technical and
scientific workforce. African Americans, Hispanics, and Native
Americans
constitute just 7% of the science and engineering workforce and less
than
10% of the engineers and less than 30% of the scientists are women.
You can introduce your students to MentorNet by
* sending out the "Call for Students" email message (below)
* making announcements in class
* talking about the program during office hours
* distributing MentorNet flyers, attached
Students should apply via the MentorNet web site:
