Subject: Graduate Poster Session (Message from J. Huntoon)

Deans/Chairs - I want to bring to your attention the upcoming Grad Student Council Poster Session (Oct. 13 and 14 in the MUB). The Grad
Students are doing some new things this year - like holding the session in a
central location (to promote interest in research among our undergrads), having the session during a campus-wide visit event (family weekend), and involving
alumni in the judging process.
The students (and I) need your help to make this event a success. Please
encourage your students to submit abstracts and participate. There will be
prizes and it will be a chance for them to get some valuable feedback. The
Grad School will be looking at the posters for examples of exciting research that can be featured in future promotional materials - so I hope you will ensure your department/program is well represented.

All the information about the event follows. Note that abstracts are due to Niranjan Londhe by September 29.

Thank you. Jackie

Fall Graduate Research Poster Session

On Friday, October 13 and Saturday, October 14, Michigan Tech graduate students will have the opportunity to present their ongoing research at a poster session sponsored by the Michigan Tech Graduate Student Council,
the Graduate School, and the Keweenaw Chapter of the Alumni Association. The poster session will be held in the Peninsula room of the MUB. Graduate
students interested in presenting a poster should submit a brief abstract (less than 250 words) to Niranjan Londhe(nrlondhe@mtu.edu) by September 29,
2006. Mr. Londhe is serving as the Graduate Student Council's poster
session coordinator for 2006. A maximum of 50 presenters can be
accommodated at the session.

Presenters will be asked to be attend the session and explain their
research to visitors between 12-2 pm on Friday and 1-3 pm on Saturday.
Visitors can view the posters throughout the day on both days even if
the presenters are not available.

Presenters will compete for ten cash prizes that will be awarded at a
reception following the poster session. Presenters, judges, and their
guests will be invited to the event.

Michigan Tech faculty members and members of the Keweenaw Chapter of
the Alumni Association will serve as judges for the event. Jackie Huntoon,
Dean of the Graduate School, described her enthusiasm about the
upcoming event: "I believe this is the first time that grad students have
teamed-up with the grad school and the local alumni chapter to highlight some of the exciting, cutting-edge research that graduate students are conducting at Michigan Tech. I'm looking forward to getting students, faculty, and alumni together to celebrate students' achievements. I hope that many
of our graduate students will submit abstracts for consideration. This is
an excellent opportunity for students to interact with their peers and for
everyone involved to learn more about what is happening at Michigan Tech.
This should end up being a lot of fun."

Presenters can learn more about how to present an effective poster by
attending a 'Lunch and Learn' session hosted by the Graduate Student
Council on Thursday, October 5, from 12-1 pm in ROTC 101 (Blue Room). Judges will receive training and scoring guidelines immediately prior to the official judging which will occur on Saturday, October 14 from 1-3 pm.
