All:
I understand that the AAUP has sent out a letter indicating that the
postponement of the unfair labor practice hearing next week is an intentional
ploy on the University's part to delay resolution of the current logjam.
The letter does not present the whole truth.
In reality, the hearing for the ULP will be at least a two day affair, if
not three days. The University's counsel contacted the AAUP counsel and
asked if two days could be scheduled next week. AAUP counsel responded
that this was not possible for him. The two attorneys decided that,
instead of each party sending several people to Lansing twice, it would be
better to reschedule when at least two back-to-back days could be
reserved. It has not yet been rescheduled. There will be a
conference call on the previously scheduled date to hold a resolution conference
and determine if there is any alternative way out of the current
situation. This will be led by the administrative law judge that is
scheduled to hear the case and all parties (University, AAUP, and petitioner)
will participate.
We should all understand that facts may, and almost certainly will, be
distorted during this time of uncertainty. If, at any time, you have any
questions or wish to ask about any rumors or AAUP statements, please feel free
to contact Ellen Horsch (eshorsch; 487-1737).
