As an update on the AAUP negotiations:
- The URL with the web site containing the current status of the
negotiations is nearing completion. You should get a note shortly with the
URL.
- We have tentatively agreed to two articles, with four more that should be
agreed to at the next session. These are close, and would have been agreed
to this week except for some late changes suggested by the AAUP. The text
of all proposals and tentative agreements will be available on the web
site.
- The union has declared impasse on several noneconomic articles.
These are not agreed to, and if neither side changes their position these items
(and any others in a similar situation) will eventually go to
mediation.
- There are several pending noneconomic articles; the union has
indicated that they will have a new counter on governance, and the university is
preparing a counter on the grievance process. The union and the University
agreed to establish a subcommittee to discuss the promotion and tenure article,
but there is not yet an agreement on a charge to the subcommittee.
- We were scheduled to begin discussion of the union's economic proposals
this week. It was clear during the discussion though, that the union
negotiating team was not prepared for a substantial discussion on the content of
their economic proposals; at one point the union's lead negotiator said "I
have not read the proposal". These will be back on the table at the next
session.
The negotiations ended without setting a firm date for the next negotiating
session. I expect this to be set within a few days though, and anticipate
that it will probably be sometime in the middle of October.
