All:
The faculty union recently sent around a note discussing their view of the differences between a professional association and a union. This is a reminder that the Michigan Tech Chapter of AAUP was recognized in 2004 as a labor union, and as a result, our actions must be guided by labor law as we proceed. Deans and Chairs must remember that labor law applies at all levels of the university, including the department and school level. We continue to remain neutral in the discussions between those faculty who favor union representation and those who are in favor of having the faculty consider decertification of the union through another election. It is up to the faculty to decide the question concerning representation, and from my perspective, the quicker we can move to a vote to finally decide the issue, the better. In the meantime, please take special care not to favor either side and if you have any questions, please contact Ellen Horsch.
Also, Gina has posted the University brief that was filed in the first unfair labor practice case
