Subject: 2005 National Research Rankings

All:

I have attached a document (Research Ranking 2005 Report) with a history of reported research funding
and our national rankings for disciplines where we are nationally ranked
[usually meaning top 100 in research expenditures].  These are compiled
by NSF, and the FY2005 numbers were just released [the full report is at
http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/nsf07318/].

The table values are $1,000's and are reported by disciplines - some are
strictly from one of our units, but other categories are combinations
across several units [Environmental Science, for example, is a
combination of SFRES and part of Geo].

As you may recall, we went through a transition in 2005 and 2006 in the
way we categorized and reported expenditures like startup, etc. and that
is reflected in the numbers for those years, but the exact sequencing
differed by unit, and hence discipline in the NSF report.

Some highlights from the attached sheet and other information in the NSF
report:

- We stayed at 179th in total research expenditures, but there was a lot
of shifting around us as NIH stayed relatively flat and other agencies
increased.
- We moved up 2 places to 127th among public institutions
- We are 79th among institutions without medical schools
- Industrial funding made up 10.57% of our expenditures, placing us 17th
in the nation in this metric

- *We increased over 12% from 2004 to 2005, once again increasing at a
greater rate than UM, MSU, or WSU*

-*Our highest ranked discipline is Mechanical Engineering, where we have
moved to 23rd, and are well positioned to move up again once the 2006
rankings are released next year [Congratulations to KRC and MEEM!].
*
- *We are poised to move into the top 100 in Mathematics next year, with
the 100th ranked institution reporting 0.945 for 2005 while our
expenditures for 2006 were 1.523.*

- Non Science and Engineering expenditures were 1.129, which ranks 208th
nationally

Anyway, there are 87 tables at the NSF report site given above, so
anyone can go data mining for other information.
