Chapter 6. Central Stores

6.2. Central Receiving and Delivery

Definition

Central Receiving and Delivery: A unit of Central Stores that receives freight shipments for University departments, and schedules delivery of the shipment to the department. Central Receiving and Delivery will also accept freight items from departments that need to be shipped out from the University.


General Information

Central Receiving is the designated location to receive most freight items for the University. Central Receiving personnel will determine where the item needs to be delivered and contact the receiving department. The receiving department may either pick up the items or schedule a time for the item to be delivered.


Policy

Although Central Receiving personnel will assist in the location of lost/ misplaced items, it will not be responsible for the replacement value of such items.


Procedure

When contacted by Central Receiving to receive a freight shipment, do the following:

  1. Determine whether to have the item delivered to the department or to have department personnel pick up the shipment.


  2. If the shipment is to be delivered, set up a day and time for delivery.


  3. Inspect package and note any damage on receiving form, if this has not already been accomplished by Central Receiving personnel.


  4. 4. Sign and accept delivery.


To have Central Receiving ship an item from the University, do the following:

  1. Contact Central Receiving at 7-2700, describe the item to be shipped and determine the following:


    1. Whether Facilities personnel will need to pick up the item from the department, or if departmental personnel will deliver it to Central Receiving.


    2. Whether the item needs to be crated by Facilities Operations prior to shipment.


    3. Schedule a day and time for pick up or delivery.


  2. If the item needs to be crated, arrangements must be made with Facilities Operations by calling 7-2711.


  3. Complete a shipping label and include a valid University account number to be charged for shipping.
