Chapter 27. University Relations
Section 27.4. Print Publications Design
27.4.1. Photographic Services
Definition
Photo Services: A unit of Design and Publication Services that provides photographic services to support University faculty and staff, including a photographer and photo lab technician on staff.
General Information
The photographer's primary responsibility is to provide photographs for the project needs of University Relations. However, services are available to the University at large and include:
- Photography, including portraiture, still life, and location work in 35mm and medium formats
- Black-and-white film processing (C-41, black and white contact sheets are available, but no color proofing)
- Color slide processing and mounting (E-6 films only)
- Copying photos and other flat art (up to 16-x-20 inches) to produce slides or prints (up to 20-x-24 inches)
- Slide duplication and limited presentation digital-file work (see lab technician for submission specifics)
- Color printing services are out-sourced and can be coordinated through the lab technician. Turn-around times vary; discuss your needs with the lab technician when you place an order.
Policy
A minimum of seven working days is needed for all jobs with a minimum $5.00 charge. If a client requests a rush job (less than seven days), all charges are doubled. Rush jobs are accommodated at the discretion of the director of design and publication services. Evening/weekend photo shoots are billed overtime rates.
Free-lance photographers or outside agencies may be used when a project cannot be accommodated within the work schedule. Any such charges will be discussed with the client before work begins on a project.
Procedure
If photographic services are desired, do the following:
- Determine or consider the following before requesting photographic services:
- What will be the date, time, and location of the shoot? (Allow enough lead time; the photographer may need to visit the site before the shoot.)
- What is the purpose of the shoot?
- How will the photos be used? (This information helps determine style, size, approach, etc.)
- Do you need color or black and white?
- Contact either the University photographer or the photo lab technician at 7-2330, to discuss or schedule the project.
- Complete a Photo Services form, including a valid University index number.
- The client will be contacted when the work is completed.
