25.1.1. Hepatitis B Vaccinations
Definition
Hepatitis B: One of several bloodborne pathogens and can cause a potentially fatal infection of the liver.
Occupational Exposure: Contact with blood and other body fluids on a regular basis.
General Information
A bloodborne pathogens program has been established to protect against occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials and includes the availability of the Hepatitis B vaccination to occupationally exposed employees.
Procedure
An employee or supervisor who suspects occupational exposure, should:
- Contact Occupational Safety and Health Services at 7-2118, for information and assistance.
- If determined to be an occupationally exposed employee, attend appropriate training as directed by the supervisor.
NOTE: Once included in the bloodborne pathogens program and provided the required training, the Hepatitis B vaccination will be offered.
- Elects to receive the vaccination and the supervisor will make arrangements with Risk Management to initiate and authorize the vaccination process.
- The supervisor directs the employee to set up an appointment with a health care provider to begin the series.
NOTE: Once the employee is vaccinated, the health care provider forwards confirmation of vaccination to Risk Management. Risk Management confirms status of employee vaccination to supervisor.
- Decline to receive the vaccination and the supervisor will direct the employee to sign a written declination form and keep it on file as required.
