24.3. Teaching and Research

General Information

Research by members of the academic departments is encouraged. Persons working on research programs for which the University is the contractor or grantee shall do such research as part of their regular work load. Salary during this period will be divided between funds for teaching and administration and funds from the contract or grant (for research) in the same ratio as the effort is divided between the two activities.

Professionally qualified full-time employees of the research agencies may engage in academic activities (teaching, directing graduate theses, etc.) in the academic departments with the approval of the head of the specific research agency. Staff members shall carry on such activities as part of their regular work load. Under these conditions, the salary of the staff member will be unchanged, and it will be divided between research funds and teaching funds in the same ratio as effort is divided between the two activities.

Policy

Members of Academic Departments

  1. Research work by faculty is encouraged. Persons working on research programs for which the University is the contractor or grantee shall do such research as part of their regular work load. Salary during this period will be divided between funds for teaching and administration and funds from the contract or grant (for research) in the same ratio as the effort is divided between the two activities.

  2. Persons working during an off-semester under the auspices of a research contract or grant may be paid one week’s salary for each week of research effort up to fourteen (14) weeks. One week’s salary during the off-semester is equivalent to 1/38 of the nine month academic salary. Persons working less than one week of full-time effort will be paid on a pro-rata basis. Compensation in excess of the fourteen (14) weeks salary must be approved in writing pursuant to Section 3.

  3. Under exceptional circumstances, extra compensation may be received for research work. Such exceptions result if a person’s regular duties cannot be reduced or if the contract is a demanding one of very short duration (e.g., less than a semester) and cannot be postponed. Such extra work is limited to an average of eight hours per week per semester and must fall within the scope of professional research as set forth in the University patent policy. Requests for extra compensation in such instances must be submitted for written approval through normal administrative channels to the appropriate vice president and to the provost and senior vice president for academic and student affairs and filed with the director of Human Resources department at least one week before the work is to begin.

Research Faculty and Staff

  1. Professionally qualified full-time employees may engage in academic activities (teaching, directing graduate theses, etc.) in the academic departments with the approval of the department chair. Staff members shall carry on such activities as part of their regular work load. Under these conditions, the salary of the staff member will be unchanged, and it will be divided between research funds and teaching funds in the same ratio as effort is divided between the two activities.

  2. Under exceptional circumstances professionally qualified full-time employees may receive extra compensation for teaching in an academic department. Such exceptions result if the regular research duties cannot be reduced or if teaching is of a short duration (e.g., less than a semester) and cannot be postponed. Such activity is limited to the teaching of one course. Arrangements for such activity require the advance written approval of the appropriate vice president and the provost and senior vice president for academic and student affairs and filed with the director of Human Resources department at least one week before the work is to begin.
